Kickstarter and the Power of Crowdfunding

Those looking to boost their fund-raising efforts will want to check out the new "crowdfunding" fundraising platform Kickstarter. Founded in April 2009 by Perry Chen, Yancey Strickler, and Charles Adler, Kickstarter is an online fundraiser/ pledge system for funding non-profit endeavors and creative projects, and is a great option for youth organizations looking to fund exciting new outreach programs. Numerous youth orgs like the Young Producers Project target, The Neutral Zone's: Youth Owned Records, and the Memorial Mosaic Mural Project, have already launched successful fund-raising programs via Kickstarter, and many more youth projects are live right now.

The Kickstarter platform is organized in two parts; project owners launch their fundraising project on the Kickstarter site by uploading their project proposal and related media, and the general public pledges any amount of money they wish into the projects they are interested in. Unlike other traditional forms of fundraising, donators cannot invest nor use their donations for a tax-write off. Instead, project owners offer creative tiered incentives for those who pledge x amount of dollars, i.e. an art print, a signed copy of their book or a download of their film. Kickstarter also utilizes an all-or-nothing system; if a project is unable to reach its fund-raising goal within a maximum of 90 days, the project will receive nothing.
