Awesome Outreach: Google's Global Science Fair

Calling all future world changers, rad scientists and Google research and development geniuses! Google is teaming up with CERN, the LEGO Group, National Geographic, and Scientific American, to launch the first ever Google Global Science Fair. "Google is looking for the brightest, best young scientists from around the world to submit interesting, creative projects that are relevant to the world today." Students all over the world between the ages of 13 and 18 are invited to enter this exciting new global science competition to compete for prizes including once-in-a-lifetime experiences, internships and scholarships. Finalists will be invited to the celebratory event at Google headquarters in California in July, where participants will showcase their winning science projects and meet some of the brightest minds in science and technology today.

Unlike local science fairs, where students face off with others in their community, the Google Global Science Fair will see students compete internationally to showcase the talents of our global youth. Any student or a team up to three, with an innovative idea can submit their project online. Best yet, students who are participating in local science fairs can submit their idea to the Google Science Fair too, there is no need to re-invent the wheel (unless of course that is your project) Interested students, and youth mentors can visit Google's Global Science Fair site for more information. Submissions will be accepted until April 4, 2011, so get cracking!

Here are some tips to get you started:

1. Direct students to the sign up page to register either as individuals or teams of up to three.
2. Discuss project requirements and entry process with students.
3. Get familiar with Google Sites so that your students are prepared to complete their project submission. Their Google Site will become their official project submission. The Materials section is full of resources for using Google products to help students illustrate their work.
4. Start immersing students in the scientific method using some tips from the table below and in our Science Resources section.
5. Assist students in developing their project and learn along with them!
6. Review the contest rules and FAQs with your students
