Image by OZinOH via FlickrIf you look around you this winter you may see something quite funny on the heads of teens. Fleece and hand-knit animal hats are this winter's hottest and most hilarious teen fashion trend. Featuring cute animal faces and floppy ears, these hats are not only huge with the otaku and the hip-geek set, even fashionistas are rocking these ironically cute hats.
Animal hats can be easily recreated and make for a great winter DIY and anime cosplay teen program. All you need are fleece fabric, needles and thread, pins, markers and paper for making patterns. While this craft may not be for first time hand-sewers, those with a few simple sewing projects under their belt will do just fine. Thanks to some crafty and devoted deviantART members, you can learn how to make your own fleece animal and anime cosplay hats with these easy-to-follow tutorials.

Last Winter, I got to hear from my daughter's school counselor about how my 13-year-old was standing out and appeared immature to her peers due to wearing a Sailor Moon cat hat (which was a bit too big, but still). I tried to explain the anime thing, but she wouldn't be wrong, it's inappropriate for a girl her age to wear hats like that, blah blah blah. Others agreed with her! They were all younger than I am! If I'd realized then how widespread it was, I'd have told her off. You'd think the fact that the hat was too big might have told them older people are wearing the hats. Anyway, a new school year approaches and I'm making her a nice panda hat to go with (and hopefully replace) the other hat.
ReplyDeleteAnd what exactly is wrong with "standing out". How ridiculous of an adult to advocate not promoting the individual and whatever they decide to wear. These hats are def a fashion statement and even if they weren't that counselor should be ashamed for making such a damaging observation. We should want to raise individuals and not lemmings that follow every "normal" trend.
